Orange Windows (2012)

piano quintet

18 minutes

Orange Windows has never been performed in its entirety. It is in three movements. The second movement and a previous version of the third movement were premiered by Vicki Ray & the Lyris Quartet on the Hear Now Festival in Venice, CA on August 25, 2012. An early version of the third movement was workshopped at the YellowBarn Young Artists' Program and performed June 30, 2011 by Reina Murooka, Kevin Hsu, Xinchi Wang, Ji-Yeon Lee, and Emma Woo.

The recordings above:
1st movement – reading by Delores Stevens & the Fiato Quartet
2nd movement – premiere performance by Vicki Ray & the Lyris Quartet
3rd movement – reading by Delores Stevens & the Fiato Quartet

Orange Windows was written over the course of two summers at the YellowBarn Young Artists' Program (2nd and 3rd movements), and my freshman fall at Harvard (1st movement and revisions). It is a larger scale three movement work for piano and string quartet. The music of Billy Childs was an inspiration over the course of this work. I was thinking along somewhat traditional lines as I put the overall structure of the piece together: an expository first movement, a combined scherzo and slow movement in the middle, and an expansive third movement. But I wrote the piece backwards, in fact, coming to the overall picture gradually.
